Welcome, Gathering, and Announcements:
(Portions of the service printed in bold are spoken by the whole congregation. The asterisk (*) indicates congregation stands, but please feel free to sit at any time. Children are always welcome at our services. Books/toys are available at the front and back of the sanctuary.)

Candle Lighting & Centring:
In my view, the mission of the church is not to enlarge its membership, not to bring outsiders to accept its terms, but simply to love the world in every possible way--to love the world as God did and does. Parker Palmer, The Company of Strangers

Gathering Words:
We celebrate that where people are gathered together in love
God is present and good things happen; life is full.
We celebrate that we are immersed in mystery;
that our lives are more than they seem
that we belong to each other and to a universe of great creative energies, whose source and destiny is God.
We celebrate that the spirit of God beat in the heart of Jesus of Nazareth
and God's good news was heard by the broken and wounded.
And most deeply we believe that in our struggle to love,
we incarnate God in the world.
And so aware of mystery and wonder, caught in friendship and laughter,
we are in awe before the joy in our hearts as we celebrate the sacredness of life.

Prayer: Surprise Us! (based on 2 Corinthians 12: 2-10, Mark 6: 7-13)

Sharing Peace & Blessings…
We are glad that the spirit of peace is present with us, the church,
as we gather to celebrate our common existence,
and the fidelity of God.

Let us extend the peace of Christ, one to another.

A Reading from Ezekiel 2:1-5
Ezekiel is possessed by a spirit and sent by God to speak to Israelites.

A Reading from Mark 6:1-13

Jesus encounters resistance to his ministry in his hometown synagogue. He then sends his disciples on an "advance mission" of the coming kingdom; to get the word out to as many villages in the area as possible.

Gospel Reflection
“And many who heard him were astonished.” Mark 6: 2

Isn’t he the carpenter?
Mary’s son?

Yes,
and God’s.

In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
and the Word was God
and the world came
to be through
him,

but
the world
did not know

the
carpenter.

Christ,
Fix our hearts.
Shape us into your Body.

Prayer of Commitment
(based on 2 Samuel 5, Mark 6: 7-13)
God,
just as You called King David so long ago,
so, you call each one of us
to speak and act on your behalf in our world today.

Forgive us when we are hesitant to follow:
when we question your call
or make excuses for our abilities;
when we complain about our lack of time
or hoard our resources.

Give us courage to step out in faith,
to go where you send us without hesitation or fear,
trusting that your presence goes with us,
and that you will provide all that we need.
Amen.

*Sending Forth:
Let us go from this place, knowing that we do not go out alone.
In ones, twos, or twelves, we go with God knowing that together we are makers of justice and joy; creators of compassion and peace.
Together, let us boldly move forward with the sure and certain knowledge that the blessing of God, who creates us, redeems us, and sustains us in each moment, is with us now and always. Amen. Reprinted from Seasons of the Spirit
